Other than the one above, I will spare you the litany of definitions, explanations, category's, regulation and legislation associated with personal protective equipment. This can already be found online or by enlisting one of the many AI creatures patiently waiting to provide a few centuries worth of research, regulation, legislation and development neatly packaged into a few paragraphs.

Don't get me wrong, we thoroughly comprehend and understand the legislation. Having actively participated in the learning and understanding of the subject matter. We hold various qualifications including the prestigious NEBOSH general certificate in occupational health and safety. No light undertaking I must admit.

Firstly, If your wearing or using any form of PPE to achieve an objective, you are at the very bottom of the hierarchy of protection. All other forms of protection such as engineering, administrative and collective have been exhausted. Its just you and the hazard.

In our line of work, rope access (work positioning in suspension) is considered to be one of the last resorts for safely gaining access. The very last and the most unappetizing of all is fall arrest. (commonly known as lead climbing!)

Comfortable within the consequences of risk

The reason we are willing to position ourselves within the lower spectrum of the hierarchy is because we implicitly trust the PPE.

We have formed a symbiotic relationship with the equipment we use, from thousands of hours of interaction, studying, inspecting, hearing and feeling. Just like a professional athlete such as a surfer or snowboarder, the equipment they use has become an extension of their own body. The PPE we use is an extension of our own.

We may be recompensed financially for this and rightfully so, as we are in close proximity to the consequences of risk. However, We also delight in being able to position ourselves in the most incredible locations. from the top of majestic trees, to the peaks of mountains, the depths of artificial climbing structures, the blades of wind energy convertors and the chains of iconic suspension bridges.
